{"id":306,"date":"2012-10-01T15:47:23","date_gmt":"2012-10-01T14:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitalmediacomputing.org.uk\/?p=306"},"modified":"2012-10-01T15:47:23","modified_gmt":"2012-10-01T14:47:23","slug":"online-communications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/digitalmediacomputing.org.uk\/?p=306","title":{"rendered":"Online Communications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/digitalmediacomputing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/27-iStock_000005622581Medium.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-307\" title=\"Network\" src=\"https:\/\/digitalmediacomputing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/27-iStock_000005622581Medium-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Network\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/digitalmediacomputing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/27-iStock_000005622581Medium-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/digitalmediacomputing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/27-iStock_000005622581Medium-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/digitalmediacomputing.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/27-iStock_000005622581Medium.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Last week we started researching types of \u00a0internet communications:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wikis<\/li>\n<li>Blogs<\/li>\n<li>Instant Messaging<\/li>\n<li>Forums<\/li>\n<li>Picture sharing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Today we did more research and started writing our reports. \u00a0We need to write a 500 word report talking about three of these areas and talking about using one of them.<\/p>\n<p>For each area we looked at we tried to answer some questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What is it?<\/li>\n<li>Examples<\/li>\n<li>What does it let me do?<\/li>\n<li>Why would I want to use it?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I wrote an example report:<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Internet Messaging<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Instant messaging (also known as IM) is a quick way of sending messages to a friend.\u00a0 You both need to be logged into the IM system.\u00a0 It is private, so your messages don\u2019t get displayed to other people (like they do on Twitter and Facebook).\u00a0 It\u2019s usually free.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Google Talk, Microsoft Live Messager (MSN) and Blackberry Messager (BBM) are all examples of instant messaging services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does it let me do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>IM lets me send private messages to my friends without using a mobile phone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why would I want to use it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s great for sending messages to my friends on my computer or using an app on my phone. I don\u2019t need to use a mobile phone which means I don\u2019t have to pay for text messages.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Picture Sharing<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Picture sharing or photo sharing is a way of putting photos online and letting other people see them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Flickr.com, Facebook photos, Photobucket.com, Joomeo<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does it let me do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It lets me put all my photos online and share them with my family and friends.\u00a0 Some sites let you edit your photos, such as correcting red eye or cropping photos.\u00a0 You can put your photos into sets (like \u201cMy summer holiday\u201d or \u201cFred\u2019s party\u201d).\u00a0 Your friends can favourite your photos and add comments to them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why would I want to use it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If my real photos or my computer were damaged then all my photos would be safe.\u00a0 Also, my mum can see photos of my holiday before I even get home!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><strong>Internet Telephony<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Internet telephony is a way of making phone calls using my computer or a phone app.\u00a0 It is also known as Voice over IP or VOIP.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Examples\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Skype, Google Talk, Bria and Mumble are examples of internet telephony.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does it let me do?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>VOIP lets me call my friends and family using an internet connection.\u00a0 I can also send photos and files and use an instant messenger facility with most VOIP services.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why would I want to use it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I can use VOIP to get cheaper calls to my friends or family than using a mobile phone.\u00a0 It is a lot cheaper to call people who live in other countries.\u00a0 It is useful for talking to more than one person (doing \u2018conference calling\u2019)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I still need to add in a description to my report of using a method of online communication. \u00a0We will be doing that next week when we will be trying out Flickr.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week we started researching types of \u00a0internet communications: Wikis Blogs Instant Messaging Forums Picture sharing Today we did more research and started writing our reports. \u00a0We need to write a 500 word report talking about three of these areas and talking about using one of them.
